About Origin

The geographical location, topography and climate of rural Odisha makes it an ideal location for growing coffee.

The coffee in the region is grown by many of these tribal farmers, who are first generation farmers. They own and manage small holding farms, many of which are managed by women. Coffee here is predominantly grown in the regions of Koraput, Kyonjhar, Rayagada and Kandhamal. The estates are situated in India’s south-west as well as well as north-east monsoon belt and have unique microclimatic conditions.

The coffee is shade grown under the jungle canopy that also supports the growth of varied shade trees such as white & red Cedar, Ficus, Teak, Jamun, Grevilla Robusta, Rosewood, Dadaps and Jackfruit.

Social Impact

For many of the tribal population, various efforts of the Kalinga Desi Foundation has provided them with employment opportunities. The foundation has worked through various initiatives and incentivized the farmers. The drive to empower and bring socio-economic development to the indigenous people of rural Odisha, lies at the heart of the work that they do. In addition to their core focus on long-term change through agri-revolution, KDF is committed to proposals that can make instant impact in the lives of the local communities. In keeping with this philosophy, KDF has collaborated with the Coffee Board of India to launch an upcycling outreaches in Koraput, while simultaneously popularizing local coffee.
